Final Weekend of MIAC Action

2008 October 30
by Brian Quarstad

This weekend draws to a close the 2008 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular conference soccer season. For those of you who may not be familiar with MIAC schools, they are all division 3 colleges. Minnesota has only one D-1 soccer program and that’s the University of Minnesota Women’s team.

The teams in mens MIAC are: Augsburg, Bethel, Carleton, Concordia (Moorhead), Gustavus, Hamline, Macalester, St. Johns, St. Mary’s and St. Olaf. The womens conference is slightly different, dropping St. John’s and adding, St. Benedict and St. Catherine’s’.

There’s a number of mens and womens games to take in this weekend. Friday night holds an interesting matchup as the Augsburg men face Macalaster with the match being played at Augsburg. The game will be played Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. and right now weather forecast call for a mild night with temperatures in the mid 50′s. Great weather to take in an evening soccer game. Only four teams make it into the MIAC playoffs and all four teams have been decided. (see standings) What makes this game interesting is that the 3rd place spot is tied presently, with St. Thomas and Augsburg at 13 pts. Only 2 pts. separate the 3rd and 4th place teams from 1st place Carleton. So all four teams are battling this weekend for home field advantage in the MIAC playoffs.

On Saturday, Sat, Nov. 1st, 6th place St. Olaf will be playing 1st place Carleton on Saturday at Carleton. The Oles will try to move ahead of Macalester who are tied with St. Olaf with 9 pts. The game is at 1:00 p.m. and should be a lot of fun with both teams located in Northfield. Because of that and the schools natural rivalry, I’m not sure there’s really a home field advantage in this game.

Also on Saturday another great contest will be 3rd place St. Thomas (tied with the Augies) as they travel to St. Peter to play 2nd place Gustavus. This game is also at 1:00 p.m. Only 1 pt separates those two teams, and again, home field advantage and final standing bragging rights are on the line.

Other mens games on Saturday are, Saint Mary’s at Bethel in Roseville @ 1:00 p.m., and Concordia at Saint John’s in Collegeville @ 2:30 p.m.

Auggies over Macalester 4-0 on Friday evening. Other two deciding men’s games should be viewable online this afternoon (GAC vs UST & CAR vs STO).

MIAC is proving to be as close as possible… again.
