Carleton women win and move to round of 8
In the first half, we were fired up and excited and had a lot of energy, but it wasn’t controlled energy. [Claremont-Mudd-Scripps] came out and surprised us, had us on our heels. It was great to come out and play our style in the second half. Our second half was much better.

The Carleton Women’s soccer team defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) on Friday night 1-0 to take them into the round of 8 in the NCAA D-3 Women’s soccer tournament. The win once again set a record for the Knights as they now hold the record at Carleton for going further than any other sports team has in an NCAA post season tournament.
Lily VanderStaay received a ball from Merrit Swain and then scored the goal on a breakaway down the right side that she hit low and hard past the Athena goalkeeper Kate Trenerry. The goal came at 37:36 and was all that was needed to win the game for the Knights.
The lady Knights (18-5) now play tonight, Saturday November 22nd, against two-time defending national champion Wheaton College (20-3-2), (Ill.) at 6 p.m. CST, with a trip to the Final Four for the winner. Wheaton defeated Washington University, 3-0, in the sectional’s first game on Friday and unfortunately have an extra day of rest. The game will be streamed online with a separate audio feed.
