NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Carleton College women’s soccer head coach Keren Gudeman was named the NCAA Division III Central Region Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). She was selected based on a vote by coaches throughout the region.

Gudeman is also a finalist for the NSCAA/adidas National Coach of the Year award, which will be announced at the annual NSCAA Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 16 in St. Louis, Mo., as part of the 2009 NSCAA Convention.

Under Gudeman’s guidance, the Knights won 9 out of 10 games to close out the regular season and earn the second seed in the MIAC playoffs. Carleton handily won both of its MIAC playoff games 3-0, defeating Macalester and Concordia.

Winning the conference tournament guaranteed the Knights a spot in the NCAA Championship for the first time in the history of the program. Carleton recorded victories over St. Scholastica, No. 6 University of Puget Sound and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in advancing all the way to the NCAA Championship Sectional Final Round (Elite Eight) where the Knights dropped a 2-1 decsion to two-time defending national champion Wheaton College.

The Knights had a record-breaking season, surpassing the team mark for season wins (18). This season continues the dramatic turnaround in the performance of the program since Gudeman’s arrival in 2006. In the four years before Gudeman’s arrival, the Knights were 26-34-7 (.388) and never qualified for the MIAC playoffs. Under Gudeman’s watch, Carleton is 43-16-3 (.694) with a pair of trips to the conference title game and a playoff record of 6-2.
