Cristiano Ronaldo was named FIFA World Player of the Year for 2008 on Monday and became the first Premier League player to get the award which was presented in Zurich.

This is the second prestigious award within the last year for the 23 year old Manchester United player. He had previously won the French Ballon d’Or award.

Surprisingly, Ronaldo gave praise to Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. There had been some friction between Ronaldo and Ferguson last summer as Ronaldo had proclaimed that he wanted to leave United. When given the award, Ronaldo said, “It’s true that the manager always has an important role to play. It was a great season for me and for my club, and the coach was important for me because I learned a lot from him.”

”His experience over so many years is of paramount importance – it’s a privilege to have such a great club manager.”
