Andrei Gotsmanov will finish out school year before joining Revs
Last week, in an exclusive interview with IMS, Andrei Gotsmanov, told me he wanted to finish school before joining the New England Revolution. Gotsmanov was the third pick for the Revs and the 24th overall draft choice. Tuesday evening I received an email from our friend Bruce McGuire at duNord Futbol, saying he had gotten in touch with Gotsmanov’s agent. According to that agent, New England has given the green light to the MN draft choice to go ahead and finish his school year before reporting to the team.
Gotsmanov had cited in the interview the importance of finishing school and getting his diploma as an important factor. This decision was not only for him but for his his parents who wanted him to graduate with his class.
In the bigger picture, the MLS draft comes at a rather odd time of year, just before training camp opens for MLS teams, but while these college students are still in school and for the seniors, just about to finish up their final semester to get their degree. Perhaps MLS should make a mandatory rule that all students get to finish up their school year before joining their team. This would encourage drafted students to finish their year out without feeling the pressure from the club to leave school early. This would also put all the teams on the same even playing field and MLS would also look good in the process, encouraging student athletes to finish school and get a diploma before starting their careers as athletes.
