Minnesota Lightning schedule released
The Minnesota Lightning’s official schedule was released by the USL on Tuesday, even though there is no mention of it on the Thunder web site. The team will play a 12 game schedule in 2009, two less than the 14 game schedule in 2008.
The Lightning will play a double header bill with the Thunder on June 27th at the National Sports Center. The game time says 6:05 pm, but I’m guessing that is not correct as the Thunder are scheduled to play at 7:35 pm. Expect that game time to change to 5:05 pm.
In a rather brutal schedule, the team’s final four games, (all in July) are all on the road. The team will play 2 games in May, 4 in June and 6 in July.
The W-League post-season has been extended to three weeks with the league semifinals and championship being split into two separate weekends. Eleven W-League teams will qualify for the post-season tournament in 2009 with the league’s Regular Season Champion (based on point percentage) receiving a bye to the league semifinals. The remaining teams will compete in three conference tournaments in playoff week one July 24-26 to determine the other three league semifinalists for the weekend of July 31-August 1 at two locations. The regular season champion will face the lowest remaining overall seed unless they have played during the season, which would result in a pairing with the next lowest seed. The championship game will be August 7-8, and will air on Fox Soccer Channel.
Rumor has it that this may be Lightning head coach Danny Storlien’s last year with the team.
