Thunder’s Nic Platter training with DC United as Zach Wells retires
Steven Goff of Soccer Insider is reporting that Nic Platter, goalkeeper for the Minnesota Thunder is in training with DC United. According to Goff, there are 6 keepers in camp with DC.
27 year old, DC United starting keeper Zach Wells, unexpectedly retired this week leaving a spot on the team. Wells was recovering from foot surgery when he announced his retirement. Wells played in MLS for five seasons with New York, Houston and United with a combined record of 17-13-9. He played once with the U.S. national team against Guatemala in 2006.
Wells began the 08 season as United’s starting goalkeeper after being traded from Houston. He went 8-8-1 in league play but was sidelined briefly in August with a foot ailment and had surgery after the season ended which ultimately ended his career.
Platter, who is from Los Angles, California, has been with the Thunder for four years. He took the starting keeper job from Joe Warren in 2007. Platter has been one of the standout keepers in the USL-1 the last two seasons. The Thunder keeper spent considerable time last pre-season with both the San Jose Earthquakes and the Chicago Fire of MLS. While spending time with the Fire in Mexico, Platter brought back some great stories of Cuauhtémoc Blanco amongst other MLS players and coaches, expressing how helpful everyone was while training with the teams.
Djorn Buchholz, GM for the Thunder said they were aware of Platter working with DC United. “We know they (DC United) are looking at him”, said Buchholz. “It’s a great opportunity for Nic (Platter) to train for the season. At the same time we know he’s still under contract with the Thunder for the next two years.” Buchholz also said the training would be good for Platter’s shoulder. Evidently Platter sprained his shoulder this winter and is working through that.
