platterThere are very few details available at the moment, but Steven Goff is reporting at Soccer Insider that Nic Platter was in the starting line-up for DC United last night and went the distance in a 2-1 win over the Puerto Rico Islanders. The only goal allowed by Platter, better known to Thunder supporters as El Disco, was in the 90th minute against a penalty kick.

I was in contact with Platter on Friday.  He said he was excited about the game and his injured shoulder was coming along nicely.

The fact Platter started and played the whole 90 minutes can only be taken as a serious interest from the DC United coaching staff. Djorn Buchholz, general manager for the Minnesota Thunder, told me a few days ago Platter is still under contract for two more years.  Even if United decided they wanted to add Platter to their roster, they would  have to negotiate a price with the Thunder.

There were periods of time last season that Platter kept the Thunder in games with his shot stopping ability. The Thunder have lost or dropped several defenders in the off season. If they lose Platter as well they will have to act fast to pick up another keeper of his quality.  As Don Gramenz said last fall, they would need to add another solid central defender which the team has yet to do.

No where on the soccer field is communication more important than in the back line. If the team needs another keeper and pick up that quality central defender, they will then need to work on gelling the defensive team in preseason training.

During his stay in Minnesota, many of us have learned what a class player and quality person Platter is. The Thunder faithful will be quite disappointed to see Platter go, if that happens. However, the bottom line is, we all wish Nic Platter the best of luck and hope he does catch on with United.
