Thursday quick notes: Marquette to play the Thunder, no more “sport the skort” and CONCACAF Champions League update
Just a quick post this morning to update you on a few items.
First of all, thanks to our IMS friend Eric who filled me in on a few things this morning. You can see his comments in the side bar. Eric runs the very helpful informative site, Madison Soccer Central. It’s a site I check several times a day and also follow on Twitter.
Marquette vs. Minnesota Thunder
Eric gave me a heads up that he’s found some information on the two scrimmages that the MN Thunder have listed on the 29th of March at Shattuck with teams to be determined. According to Eric, the Marquette website has that date marked with a scrimmage against the Thunder. Ahaaa-Haaa? Marquette has the other scrimmage that day noted as being with Graceland University. OK, I admit, I’d never heard of Graceland. So I looked it up and it appears to be a college in Iowa.

Sport the skort?
Eric gave us another heads up. From the blog called, Women’s Soccer Show, which is also a podcast featuring the WPS. That website tells us there are no longer any worries about the WPS “Sportin the Skort”. The skorts we saw on the WPS web site are actually called ‘wraps.’ They are optional and only for “fun,” according to Kristine Lilly. They can be removed for games and are just an accessory. An accessory? This WPS talk is really going to take some getting used to.
Kristine Lilly said on the Today Show that they’d never play in them: “Come on do you really think we are going to play in skorts? It’s an accessory and makes it fun.” She went on to say they detach with a set of buttons. Hmmm, I don’t think I’ve ever worn a soccer short with buttons on them, let alone one button.
Montreal Impact
The Montreal Impact beat Santos Laguna 2-0 in front of 55,571 very happy soccer fans in Montreal. Eduardo Sabrango scored both goals. Ex Thunder player Steven deRoux entered the game early in the second half and made an immediate impact with his quickness. He stole a number of balls from Santos and continued to drive up the left flank and create one on one situations.
Overall, it seemed Montreal was the better of the two sides on Wednesday evening, although the statistics do not back my perception up. Those stats looked to be pretty even.
My two favorite moments of the evening was the mishap that allowed the second goal. It was a mixup between the defender and keeper Oswaldo Sanchez, who is also the Mexican National team keeper who many of us have come to dislike for his often cheap play. My feeling was it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. The other moment was late in the game when the camera turned to Santos coach Daniel Guzmánand the FSC announcer asked, I wonder what he’s thinking right now. Guzmán’s finger was stuck up his nose digging for something. A classic moment.
Here are the game highlights:

As a Wisconsin transplant, I appreciate the link to Madison Soccer Central!
Well, for the few male players from MN playing D-1 and D-2, most of them are in schools in Wisc. Madison, Milwaukee, Parkside to name a few, and many of our young ladies playing there as well.
I’ve written Eric from MSC and let him know, his site was sort of the inspiration for IMS. I asked myself why we didn’t have a legitimate soccer information site like that in MN, when the number of youth players is higher than Wisc. is.
