Notch up another USL win in CONCACAF Champions League play

Another USL team took a step forward last night as the Puerto Rico Islanders came back from a slow start to beat the Honduran team Marathon by a score of 2-1.

Marathon finished the first half with a goal in the 41st minute. Oscar Bonilla crossed in the box to Jerry Palacios who finished easily.

It wasn’t until the 74th minute that the Islanders finally drew even. 2008 USL-1 MVP Jonathan Steele sent a ball into the box that Nicholas Addlery deftly tipped with his head up and over the Marathon keeper Obelar and into the net. Addlery was recently acquired from the 2008 Champion side, Vancouver Whitecaps.

Second half substitute Jagdeosingh, who had made a definite impact for the Islanders after being subbed in, scored just 7 minutes later. After moving down the left flank, Jagdeosingh cut the ball square and while dribbling into the box, slashed a quickly taken and narrow angled shot hit with such power that Obelar didn’t have time to react. The 81st minute shot was all the Islanders needed to take the victory and prepare for next week’s meeting of the 2nd leg trip as they travel to Honduras.

An interesting note on the game from OSC: Coupled with Montreal’s 2-0 victory over Mexico’s Santos Laguna Wednesday, the Islanders (4-2-3) and Impact (5-1-3) have an impressive combined record of 9-3-6 in the competition for the two United Soccer Leagues First Division clubs.
