Bittersweet homecoming for Thunder fans as Platter heads home from DC

platterSteven Goff at Soccer Insider was again the agent for Nic Platter news, this time telling us that things had not worked for the Los Angeles native and that DC United had released the trialist. At several points in the last two weeks it looked as if Platter was a sure thing to be the backup keeper for United. As reported here, Nic had a great pre-season game for DC United when facing the Puerto Rico Islanders in a friendly. Then last Saturday in the Carolina Cup, Nic was called into action unexpectedly when starting keeper Louis Crayton was injured. After another injury and two red cards, DC United were barely holding on and eventually allowed three goals against Real Salt Lake.

I’ve not talked to Thunder management or Platter himself, but the goalkeeper is still under contract with the Thunder for 2 more years, so there is no reason to believe that he wouldn’t report to the team for pre-season training.

Thunder supporters had mixed emotions as they posted on the team’s discussion board today. On the one hand, the team will be strengthened by the return of Platter, but there was also disappointment for Platter himself as fans were very supportive of the keeper.

I was in contact with Platter this weekend before the game on Saturday and he was fully aware of all the support from Minnesota Thunder fans and was very grateful.

Our hearts all go out to Nic Platter but we welcome him back to the Thunder fold with open arms. For at least one more year we will be graced with heart-stopping saves, crazy haircuts and will once again hear the chants of “There’s only one el Disco” and “You’ll never beat Nic Platter.”

There is only one el Disco and he’s a blue.

Nic is amazing! we love to have him back in minnesota but it will not be long. I know nic well and though I do not know anything substantial Nic will not be here for ever. He is just too good for USL1.
