Luchi Gonzalez Retires
The Minnesota Thunder announced the retirement of Luchi Gonzalez, which had been rumored since last fall. Gonzalez was only with the Thunder for one season, but the 2001 Herman Trophy winner told USL.com that he was thankful for the time spent with the Thunder.
“I considered retiring last year before I signed at Minnesota, but I am so glad I took the opportunity that Manny Lagos and the Thunder gave me last season,” said Gonzalez. “Making the playoffs was our goal before the season started, and I feel very proud to have played a role for the Thunder in our hunt last year to get into the post season. Retiring was obviously one of the most difficult choices I have made in my professional career. I will always be indebted to the Thunder for giving me the opportunity to wear their shield, and I want to personally thank all coaches, staff, and fans, for always showing warmth and generosity to me and most importantly to my family and making us feel at home in Minnesota at all times.”
Gonzalez was clearly a veteran on last year’s very young Thunder team and often lead the team though example. He logged in 29 matches for the team playing both forward and midfielder with 2 goals and 5 assists. Gonzalez finishes off his career, having played in Sweden, Peru, and MLS, and the USL.
The Florida native will continue to live in his home state teaching Algebra and coaching soccer at Columbus High School.
Last year in the USL offseason, Gonzalez coached Felix Varela High School to the 2008 State Championship which was no small feat for a state full of quality soccer players.
Good luck to Luchi Gonzalez in his teaching and coaching career.
