The Puerto Rico Islanders defeated Cruz Azul last night 2-0 in the USL-1 team’s home leg of the semi-final of the tournament.  Over 13,000 watched the game at the Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium. A place that has been coined “El Cementerio Centroamericano” for all the teams Puerto Rico have defeated there in the course of this tournament.

The Islanders scored both goals in the first half of play. The first on some nice team play ending in a shot slotted to the far post by Sandy Gbandi in the first 10 minutes of the game. Then in the 37th minute on a dead ball, Gbandi was again involved with the scoring. He hit a curling free kick into the box from a good 30 yards out on the left touch line. Nicholas Addlery broke free of his mark and made a diagonal run across the box to tip the ball with his foot that was raised head high, and redirected it into the right side of the goal.

BoriQa has yet another great cartoon on his blog and in The Offsides rules.com. This time a rather ghoulish image but it’s the fabled Chupacabras (goat sucker) with Cruz Azul being the victim.

Great win for P.R. They withstood quite an onslaught in the second half. I fear for them on the return leg in Mexico. Hopefully they can pull it off.
