The LA Sol beat the Washington Freedom 2-0 in the inaugural game of the Women’s Professional Soccer League in front almost 15,000 at Home Depot Center. Did you watch it? It was pretty entertaining but like all women’s sports very different than the men’s game. I’ll be a Chicago Red Stars supporter.

Click on the image above and to be taken to the WPS matchtracker which is interesting. I’m still trying to figure out all the features but it seems a bit high on glitz for me. Check it out and see what you think.

I’m a BIG fan of Women’s Soccer and I loved watching the WUSA but I have to say that this WPS game was a JOKE! I hope that the league can salvage itself from this debacle and get these “pro” teams together and play somwthing that resembles a level of play that can compete with the likes of National teams or the old WUSA.

Reasons the Inagural Game was a failure!
    1. The first ever goal of the league was an OWN GOAL and was scored as a header goal by L.A.(the replay on my tivo clearly shows that the L.A. player never touched the ball)

    2. The commentator “Rogindino” continued to mispronounce the name of the L.A. team calling them the Sall rather then the Soul (spelled Sol)

    3. The players played the game with no creativity or imagination and it showed. Marta was the ONLY player on the field worth watching and I’m not even a big fan of hers.

    4. Scurry is DONE and should have retired a year ago. She could barely clear the ball outside her penalty box and her defense wasn’t much better.

    5. I can’t watch soccer when the teams play kick-ball for 85% of the time of possesion.

I think the first goal was a foul that was not called rather than an own goal.

Calling the first match a debacle is extremely harsh. The league has logged 9o minutes total – give them some time to find their feet.

    Thanks Nathan,

I totally agree. I’ve just been really busy posting and editing things. Yes, “debacle” is harsh indeed. I too thought it was a foul. Most refs will call that but not always. It is a 50/50 ball but the ref will protect the keeper in most cases. It was clearly not an own goal. Scurry is a name so they are carrying her and a MN native so be nice. However, she has seen better playing days, no doubt. I totally disagree with the lack of creativity. There were times and I didn’t think Washington looked very good, but LA certainly had moments of creativity and clean crisp passing with lots of off the ball movement.

Nothing is ever as bad as you think it is nor as good as you might want to think it was. I’ve heard many people complain that the MN Thunder aren’t as good as the old teams of years ago. The Thunder dominated teams years ago, but the quality of players in general couldn’t hold a candle to the typical USL player today. The level of all players and teams have gone up because of the development of youth soccer in this country and the exposure to better soccer. I have no doubt that the level of player in the WPS (overall) is much better than it was several years ago.

As Nathan said, give it some time. Many of these teams have only been training for 3 weeks. Yikes, I’d hate to have someone give me a job assessment after three weeks on the job.
