Thunder Signs Haitian International Forward Leonel Saint-Preux and Defender Chris Clements
BLAINE, MN (Wednesday, April 15, 2009)
The Thunder announced today the signings of Forward Leonel Saint-Preux and Defender Chris Clements. Saint-Preux has signed a two year contract, while Clements has signed for three. Both players have joined the team and started training. The Thunder have three road matches remaining before returning to Minnesota for the home opener Saturday May 2 against the defending champions, the Vancouver White Caps.
Saint-Preux played for his native Haitian National Team during qualifying for both the Olympics and the World Cup. His most memorable moment for the Haitian National Team came when he scored a 40-yard goal against Canada in a 2-1 win during Olympic qualifying. In February of this year, he played in a preseason game with the New York Red Bulls, during which he scored 2 unassisted goals against the Kansas City Wizards in a 4-4 tie.
Leonel is an attacking forward who likes to play with his back to the goal, but also loves to take players on from the front as well, said Thunder Head Coach Donny Gramenz. Leonel has a tremendous work ethic and plays with great pace. He is an exciting addition to our team.
Chris Clements is joining the Thunder after enjoying great success playing at the University of Tulsa. A four year letter winner, Clements started 73 of the 78 games he played in as a Golden Hurricane. The Columbus Crew rewarded Clements’ hard work by selecting him with the 60th pick overall in this year’s MLS draft. Clements was also a member of the U20 National Team in the spring and summer of 2006.
Chris is a young kid who is going to add tremendous depth to our defensive line, said Gramenz. Chris is a great passer from the back, he is good in the air, and I think that he compliments the players that we already have in the back very well.
