1978 Minnesota Kicks vs. New York Cosmos Playoff Videos – Who Has the Tapes?

Shortly after I started this blog in October 2008, I received an email from Dave Wasser. Wasser is a name that may be new to those of you who are younger. Those of us from the US who have been around the game for a while have come to rely on Wasser to bring back memories of a very important part of our soccer development in this country, the North America Soccer League (NASL).
Wasser collects and distributes video of old NASL games as well as early US Soccer games. You can go here to check out his collection. You can also check out the story I did on him last November.
It wasn’t what Wasser has that caused him to contact me again, it was what he didn’t have. You see, Wasser is still in search of the tape of all tapes—the videos of the Minnesota Kicks versus the New York Cosmos in a home and away play-off series from 1978. Wasser is still digging hard, writing emails, making phone calls, doing whatever it takes find the lost tapes that no one claims to have. He’s not making any progress and he needs our help. He has contacted numerous soccer organizations in Minnesota and hasn’t even gotten a response back acknowledging his emails or phone calls.
If anyone knows someone who may have a copy of those tapes, or even if you know something about someone who may know something, please send an email to me through the contact form or contact Dave directly by emailing Dave Wasser.
Perhaps someday soon, with your help, we will have available to us the video set of two of the greatest games ever played on US soil, thereby securing a historical legacy to future generations of US Soccer fans.

I would love to see that game again … I was a young boy at the time, and would ride my bike to the Kick’s ticket office. Too young to enjoy the full festivities of the Tiger lot, I went to as many games as I could with some other friends from the neighborhood.
Neal, I was at the game were we thrashed the Cosmos. I remember were I was sitting and I remember the score and one Willies goals but that’s about it. For some reason the rest it blanked out and even though I was of age, I was not a drinker back then. I have no idea why I don’t remember it more clearly.
I do have many memories of the Kicks games however and special moments both on the field and in the stands as well as in the parking lot. Those were some fantastic times. I hope to be able to take the time to write and compile those stories someday.
I, too, was at that game. However, I am a bit younger than the rest of you so my memories aren’t as vivid about that specific game as the rest of yours.
I have a lot of memories about the Kicks days. I even wrote a brief story about my time between 1976 and 1981. I’ll have to post that sometime.

Ask Buzz about this. He has some old Kicks game tapes and I remember watching a few that involved the Kicks and Cosmos…Not sure if it’s the same playoff series, but it’s worth a shot.
