Life Besides Soccer – Is there such a thing?

My apologies for not posting much the last several days. I’ve struggled with some back issues that have forced me to stay away from the computer for a few days.

I’ve also been involved with a very exciting journey that my youngest son Jacob is about to embark on. Jake attends Augsburg College in Minneapolis and will be a Sr. this fall. He is a political science major and has served 3 years on the day student government with the last year served as vice president. He was successful in getting numerous green initiatives passed at the school and in doing so won the 2009 leadership award at Augsburg. At the same time Jake managed to do an internship for a group of politicians from Minnesota who created legislative reform in the early 70′s. Jake is investigating and finding citations for a book being written by the group.

During this time, Jake became an avid bike rider and made a deliberate choice not to own a car while in college. He rides his bike(s) everywhere and in doing so met a number of other like minded Augsburg students. Jake and 3 of those students will be embarking on the bike ride of their lives as they leave Minneapolis on Thursday morning May 21, for Portland Oregon.

Why Portland? Portland has some of the most advanced biking legislation in the country and their hope is to bring some attention to the need for reformed biking legislation here in Minneapolis. While there, they will be meeting with various politicians and police officials as a fact finding mission, hoping to come back to Minneapolis with ideas to make the Minnesota city number one in the nation for biking commuters.

The group is still looking for places to stay while in Portland as they are on a very limited budget. If IMS readers have any leads on housing please let me know.

I’ve set up a website for Jake and you can check out more information there as well as a very informative but short documentary video that was created for the group.

I’m looking forward to the Memorial Day Weekend and posts may be a bit infrequent until after the holiday.

If I knew anyone in Portland I would be glad to help out.

Other than that I would have to say nicely done to Jacob. Young people getting green initiatives passed is an unqualified good thing.
