US Open Cup -Thunder to Play Nebraska 402 Tuesday Night @ the NSC – 7:05 CST – $5.00 Tickets
Come join the Minnesota Thunder in the teams first 2009 US Open Cup game.
The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is the oldest standing sports tournament in the United States. It’s similar to other countries domestic tournaments, like England’s FA Cup, where an amateur team could end up playing a top tier team.
Tuesday evening at the National Sports Center, the Thunder will play an USASA team called the Nebraska 402. The team originally didn’t have a name but after beating a number of teams by wide margins, the US Open Cup started asking for a name for the team. They came up with one by calling themselves their area code – 402. The Nebraska 402 will have a familiar face on the team. Former MLS and USL player Johnny Torres.
Torres is now an assistant coach at his alma matar Creighton University. He was the fifth overall pick by the New England Revolution in the 1998 MLS Draft and later played for the Miami Fusion, Chicago Fire, the Minnesota Thunder and Milwaukee Wave United.
Could this be the start of a positive trend for the Thunder, or do they give up their first round game to this amateur side?

Please let this be the start of a positive trend for the Thunder and not a replay of the effort against the Chicago Sockers. Right now the club needs to defeat someone, anyone, in any context.
You are soooo right Nathan! That’s why I asked Donny the question several weeks ago when they played the Sockers why he thought the team should play their bench players. He felt the guys on the bench hadn’t had a game in over a month which I understand. But if it’s me, I play my starters and try to beat the wazoos out of the opponent and then put in the subs later if you can get a lead. That was a point when the team could have maybe scored a few goals and started something positive on offense.
Note: It’s always so much easier coaching from the stands, isn’t it?
