Confederations Cup Starts Today
The Confederations Cup in South Africa gets underway today with Iraq playing South Africa, the host nation. In case you are not familiar with the Confederations Cup, it’s a competition to prepare the host nation of the World Cup and takes place the summer before the competition. In other words, its sort of a dress-rehearsal for the World Cup. The host nation (South Africa) gets a free pass into the competition as does the last World Cup winner (Italy in 06). The other countries involved are the winners of the Confederations Cup.
All games are shown live on the ESPN Networks in the United States. If you can take the time, come join me with some of my friends at the Sweetwater Bar and Grille in St. Paul and watch the US take on Italy in the first game for the US National Team. This is also the first time the US has faced Italy since World Cup 2006.
Here are the groupings and teams.
