Thursday Footy Recap
Four games to mention this morning, starting with our Minnesota teams:
Minnesota
Vancouver 4-0 Minnesota
The troubles just continue to mount for the Minnesota Thunder. Minnesota was in Vancouver Thursday night and played a fairly even first half of football with the score ending 1-0 Vancouver after the first 45 minutes. Martin Nash scored in the 7th minute to a typically slow out of the gate Thunder team. Minnesota had chances to score but couldn’t finish and eventually the same road woes that have plagued the team all year struck again. In the 71st minute Quavas Kirk got beat in the box and, as he struggled to keep up, the two players twisted and the pair went down with a penalty awarded to Vancouver. After that, the team seemed to lose belief and were scored on two more times, in the 79th minute and the 81st minute. The team has now lost their last two road games by a total of 8 goals.
Lightning 6-0 Fort Wayne Fever
No real game report on this one but the Lightning are on a long road trip. Minnesota won their last game 6-0 as well when they played the Kalamazoo Outrage on July 3rd. The Lightning now move on to play the West Michigan Fire Women on Saturday and then turn right around and play Kalamazoo away on Sunday. A tough road trip for the Lightning who currently sit in 3rd place in the Midwest division of the USL W-League. Minnesota is now 5-3-1 with 16 points — 8 points in front of 4th place Fort Wayne but 10 points behind 2nd place FC Indiana.
Gold Cup
Guadeloupe 2-0 Nicaragua
Guadeloupe has a surprisingly good team with some excellent talent for a tiny island nation. They proved that again on Thursday, defeating Nicaragua even though Guadeloupe was playing with only 10 men after a sending off in the 67th minute. With 2 games played, Guadeloupe now sit atop their group with 6 points.
Panama 1-1 Mexico
Our southern neighbors seem to continue to struggle from the once all powerful CONCACAF foe they once were. Again, discipline problems effected El Tri. This time, even manager Javier Aguirre got into the action kicking Ricardo Phillips, a Panamanian player, as he dribbled down the touchline near the Mexican bench. A truly amazing sight. Aguirre and Phillips were both ejected; Phillips for pushing the coach after being kicked. Aguirre is sure to be punished by FIFA with a multiple game suspension. Mexico sits in 2nd place with 4 points in the group. The following video of the Mexico v Panama game shows Aguirre’s kick to Phillips’ stomach.

If Aguirre sees anything less than a 10 match ban, it proves that CONCACAF is still a shill for the Mexicans. What a complete joke. Phillips should not have been sent off for shoving a coach who kicked him, Aguirre is a pathetic excuse for yet another in the list of Mexican failures.
There’s no way he gets a 10 game suspension. I would imagine a 3 game suspension would be in order. I agree, what’s Phillips supposed to do in that situation. I don’t think he realized the ref saw it and was right behind him. Retaliation always gets the call!
I don’t even know what to say about the Thunder any more. They’re not that talented, obviously, and I guess I can understand if the players just generally feel hopeless at this point. It’s been a season of blown leads and road beatings.
Regardless: they look like an 0-7 HS football team that’s playing the conference champions in Week 8. Just trying to get through the game without getting too embarassed.
