Marwa Omot - November 15, 1985 - August 09, 2009

A former soccer player at Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) was tragically found dead, floating in the Mississippi River last Sunday, August 9, 2009.

Marwa Akway Omot’s body was spotted by people on a cruise ship in the afternoon of the 9th, near Boom Island Park which is located just north of downtown Minneapolis. Police believe Omot was in the water about two days before he was discovered. The cause of death is still unknown. Omot was only 23 years old.

Omot played for DCTC from 2004 to 2006 and was a 2004 Minneapolis Edison High School graduate.

According to Cam Stoltz, head coach at DCTC, Omot left his war torn land of Sudan in 1996 as at 10 years old. Stoltz said that ironically he was just thinking the previous week as he was preparing for the 2009 season, “how lucky we [DCTC] were not to have a tragedy such as I hear happens at so many other college athletic programs.”

Stoltz said Omot had formerly worked at the Airport at the Cinnabon shop but that had been attending classes at MCTC for Homeland Security.

Stoltz’s recalled interactions Omot had with his family and was very impressed with how “nice” the Sudan native was. The Blue Knight coach reported he has a tradition of calling all his players each season the day before practice starts and he still remembers the phone call to Omot.

“I remember how excited he was to get out of the city,” said Stoltz. “He was ready to start college and to play soccer.”

Omot is survived by family and friends here in the United States and in the Sudan.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1930 Diffley Road in Eagan – TIME PENDING with a visitation 1 hour prior to the Service at church.
Interment is pending.

Inside Minnesota Soccer sends our condolences to the family and friends of Marwa Akway Omot.
