The #19 nationally ranked Gophers open their 2009 season tonight against the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Friday Aug. 21 at 6:00 pm.

Minnesota and South Dakota State met twice last season with the Golden Gophers winning both.  The first was in Brookings, S.D. where Minnesota won 2-0, and the second time came in the second round of the NCAA Tournament that the Gophers won 2-0 that ended the NCAA Tournament for our prairie neighbor.

Since South Dakota State made the jump to Division I, they have met up with Minnesota five times, including twice last season.  The Golden Gophers lead the all-time series 4-0-1, and have won three straight.

After the season opener, the Golden Gophers will travel to Georgia for a pair of games on Aug. 28 and 30.  First, Minnesota takes on the University of Georgia, before closing the trip against Kennesaw State.

Aug. 21 will be Campers Day, meaning all who attended the Minnesota Soccer Camps this summer get in free and their parents get in for $1.

It will also be Facebook Friends Day, with the first 50 Facebook friends through the gate receiving two free admissions and a free t-shirt.

The Star Tribune’s Roman Augustoviz featured formerly redshirted and US National Team goalkeeper Cat Parkhill in a feature.  Augustoviz says, the Gophers are confident that freshman Cat Parkhill will pick up where the record-setting Lindsey Dare left off.
