MIAC Soccer Season Opens with Some Surprises

2009 September 2
by Brian Quarstad
The 2009 MIAC Mens Soccer season got underway on Tuesday with non-conference games.
Gustavus College may not have been ranked nationally this preseason like last years top teams Carlton and Augsburg were, but evidently MIAC coaches know something about the team that the NCAA folks don’t. They have the Gusties ranked #1 in their preseason poll and Gustavus did not disappoint the prognosticators winning 6-0 over Bethany Lutheran College.
Head coach Larry Zelenz’s squad scored four times on 14 shots in the first half. Mark Adams just three minutes into the match. Midfielder Fraser Horton had a brace. Other goal scorers were Sisay Ashenafi, Skylar Schulz, and Daniel Jarrett.
Skylar Schulz (23) celebrates with Justin Egleseder (11) after Schulz scored on a pretty direct kick late in the first half.
Carlton College, ranked 14th nationally, were stunned by Wartburg College 3-0. The loss for Carlton came at their home Bell field. Only one other opponent has won at Carltons home in the last two and half seasons.
“Hats off to Wartburg. They were really well prepared and played a great game,” said Carleton head coach Bob Carlson. “We were outplayed, but it’s early in the season. We learned some things about our team, and we’ll move forward.”
September 27, 2005, was the last time the Knights had 3 goals scored against them.
Augsburg, ranked 17th nationally, defeated University of U of M Morris, 1-0 in overtime. The shot was credited as an own goal but was caused from a good corner kick taken by sophomore Matt Bowman. “The goal was a product of Peter Loyd’s work. Matt Bowman served a corner that Loyd knocked down across the goal line before a Morris player bumped it into the back of the net,” said head coach Greg Holker. Bowman was making his first start since missing the entire 2008 season with a life-threatening heart condition.
New Hamline head coach Jon Lowery isn’t exactly easing into his new job. He started his non-conference season off with a trip to #19 ranked Dominican University. The Dominican Stars started off the scoring in the 31st minute and then scored again right after the half. But Matt Warhol (Sr., Andover, Minn.) scored the Pipers’ goal with seven minutes to play in the game. First-year Sam Slagle (Appleton, Wis.) was credited with the assist.
They Pipers continue on the road and travel to North Central (Illinois) tomorrow, Wednesday, September 2, for a 5 pm start.
In other scores:
Bethel shut out Crown College 2-0.  David Swenson (Jr., Ham Lake, Minn.) scored both goals for Bethel and Nick Kantor (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) earned a shutout.
Macalester played Luther College to a 0-0 draw
St. Thomas defeated Northwestern College 1-3 on the road. The lone goal scored by Sophomore Mike Hutton.
