It’s been quite a week for Apple Valley High School boys soccer coach Chuck Scanlon. All in one week Scanlon tied the record for most wins by a soccer coach (500) and broke that record with two more wins.

On Tuesday, Scanlon tied the record for wins in Minnesota which was formerly held by retired Minnehaha Academy coach Guido Kauls. Scanlon tied the record with a 4-1 win over conference opponents Eden Prairie on Tuesday.

Kauls was in attendance to watch his long time rival and friend Scanlon tie the record. The Minnehaha coach had held the record of 499 wins since 2000 when he hung up the clipboard and retired from coaching until 2005, when he added one more win to bring the total to 500. In the fall of 2005, Kauls was given the opportunity to expand on his record by filling in for Minnehaha Academy’s coach, a game in which his team emerged victorious giving him his 500th win. Kauls’ lifetime high school coaching record was 500-275-75.

On Thursday, just 2 days after Scanlon had tied the record, his #1 ranked AA team defeated conference opponents Chanhassen by a score of 7-0 giving Scanlon his 501st win and breaking the old record. On Saturday, the Eagles defeated non-conference opponents St. Paul Academy 5-0, bringing the team to a  season record of 8-0. The win also gave Scanlon his 502nd career win as a high school coach.

“I am excited about it every season,” said Scanlon. “I am like a kid in a candy store, a kid at Christmas. It is fun to keep coming back.”

Scanlon, in his 34th year as soccer coach of the Eagles and who has a 502-87-49 lifetime record can also claim 7 state high school AA Championships.

“I’m going strong,” Scanlon said. “I’m just as excited now as I was years ago, or else I wouldn’t be coaching.”

Inside Minnesota Soccer congratulates Chuck Scanlon for his record-breaking accomplishment.
