US Eliminated from U-20 World Cup
The US was eliminated today from the U-20 World Cup being held in Egypt. With only three points and a minus three goal differential after a win against Cameroon and losses to Germany and Korea Republic, the U.S. needed certain results in Group E today to go their way.
With Brazil defeating Australia, U.S. head coach Thomas Rongen’s side only needed the Czech Republic to beat CONCACAF Champion Costa Rica by a shutout or at least two goals to advance, but Czech Republic only won the match by a one-goal margin, 3-2. Due to the result, the U.S. and Costa Rica tied with minus three goal difference, but Costa Rica will advance with five goals scored compared to the USA’s four.
The US lost their first game to Germany 3-0, then defeated Cameroon 4-1 and finally lost to the Korea Republic 3-0. The US goal differential was -3.
It is the first time that the U.S. team has failed to advance past the group stage at the U-20 World Cup since 1987.
The players will depart Suez on Monday, and return to their respective club and college teams.
