U of M Gophers Bethke and Company Breaking Records against University of S.D.
Junior Katie Bethke scored a career high 4 goals today and added 2 assists to gather 10 points individually and help her U of M Gophers to a 9-0 win against a rather hapless University of South Dakota Coyotes.
The University of Minnesota Rouser is played at home games each time the Gophers score a goal. For the first time ever, the 651 fans at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium may have gotten tired of hearing that Minnesota Rouser on Sunday afternoon as the women’s soccer team routed the University of South Dakota Coyotes by a score of 9-0.
The Gophers scored 3 goals in the course of 5 minutes with their fist three shots on goal and ended the 1st half with a total of 4 goals. They added 5 more in the second half scoring 4 in 10 minutes.
Bethke was clearly the star of the day. With her 4 goals she becomes just the second player in school history to tally a four-goal game as she ties the record set by Erin Hussey in the 1996 season. She also improves her season total to 11 goals which is tied with Rachael Roth from 2002 as the best mark of the 2000′s and the best since Nicole Lee scored 17 in 1998.
Bethke also knocked Roth out of the top-10 in the career points list and she jumped into the top-10 at number nine with 56 career points. Bethke’s 20 career goals are also number nine all-time, as are her 16 career assists.
Not to be outdone was Olivia Bagnall, who scored two goals in today’s game. The freshman from Lakeville, MN scored her first goal for the Gophers last week against Illinois.
The lopsided contest allowed coach Mikki Denney Wright to allow some of her younger players to get some minutes and they were all up to the task. Backup goalkeeper Katie Roberts (Apple Valley, Minn.) came in after the first 3 Gopher goals and logged 66 minutes and gained a shutout.
For a 10 minute period in the second half, coach Wright played with only 10 players.
Curiously, the Coyotes continued to play an offside trap throughout the game even though Minnesota time and time again broke through with diagonal runs and penetrating throughballs.
Minnesota ended the game outshooting the Coyotes 26-1. Corners were 10-1 in Minnesota’s favor and South Dakota keeper Taura Truba was called upon to make 10 saves to the Gophers 0.
The Gophers are now 9-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
