WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 13, 2009) – U.S. National Soccer Team forward Charlie Davies is in stable condition following injuries sustained in a one-car accident on the George Washington Parkway early Tuesday morning in Northern Virginia. There was one fatality in the accident.
Neil Buethe, US Soccer’s Media Relations Director said that Davies was scheduled to undergo more than 5 hours of surgery which was to have started at 11:00 a.m. ET
The USSF press statement simply said that Davies is currently undergoing surgery at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. U.S. Soccer will release additional information when it becomes available.
The Los Angels Times is reporting that 3:15 at a.m. the 23 year old forward for FC Sochaux in France was involved in a one car accident on the George Washington Parkway and was taken to Washington Hospital Center. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known but they were not believed to be life-threatening, according to a team spokesman. However, a U.S. Soccer spokesman said the injuries might be career-threatening.
A woman was killed in the accident, in which the vehicle was torn in half. The number and identity of others in the vehicle, which struck a guard rail, was not known. However one report says there were 3 including Davies in the vehicle. The USSF is saying it was reported to them that Davies was not the driver of the car.
“Obviously, as a team we were saddened to learn this news,” said U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family, as well as the people in the car and the families of the others involved. As a team, we are relying on each other in a moment that has for sure hit us all hard.”
Davies is in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. National Team as the squad prepares for its final 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, taking place tomorrow against Costa Rica at RFK Stadium.
Davies, who has played 17 matches for the USA while scoring four goals, started and played 78 minutes in the USA’s 3-2 victory over Honduras in San Pedro Sula last Saturday that clinched a berth for the United States to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
