Update on Charlie Davies and a Statement from his Family
There’s not a lot of new information coming in on the accident that Charlie Davies was involved with early Tuesday morning and still no word on who the driver is or their condition.
Steven Goff was reporting this morning that US coach Bob Bradley visited Charlie on Wednesday morning and that he was responding to doctors but was still heavily sedated.
Last night at the 9th minute of the game those in the supporters section raised sheets of paper with the #9 on it and lit smoke bombs as a tribute to Davies.
#9’s were also held up at the Sweetwater Bar and Grille in St. Paul last night as a tribute to Davies. A few photos were taken and they were sent to Davies and his family this morning along with wishes for a speedy recovery from all those in attendance at the Sweetwater last night.
The tribute at RFK Stadium and locations across the US was put together quickly yesterday and originated through the social media network of Twitter. Messages were being spread yesterday to print out the #9’s if you were going to attend the game Wednesday evening at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC.
Beau Dure of USA Today Twittered today that the President of US Soccer, Sunil Gulati, was impressed with the impromptu tribute. Gulati said, “Amazing technology that a few people on Twitter can organize all that. And amazing fans!”
Today the family of Davies released a statement thanking everyone for the support:
In light of yesterday’s car accident involving Charlie Davies, the Davies family would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone for their thoughts, messages and prayers. The tremendous support the family has received is of great comfort and much appreciated at this difficult time. Our thoughts also go out to the families and friends of those involved in the accident.
We would also like to thank all the staff at Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C. and the staff at the United States Soccer Federation for all their tremendous efforts.
Charlie is in a serious but stable condition and is resting after extensive surgery. If you would like to send any messages of support to Charlie we have set up an e-mail account at CharlieDavies9@yahoo.com.
Thank you again and we will keep you informed when possible as Charlie continues his recovery.
