Calum_MallaceThe name Mallace may be Scottish but it’s a familiar one to most Minnesota soccer fans. Both Calum and his older brother Craig, who were born in Torphichen, Scotland, were four year starters at Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. Craig went on to play for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, and then spent several years with the Minnesota Thunder.

Calum chose to attend a Wisconsin school as well, but his choice was Marquette and the Golden Eagles are not sorry they recruited the 6’2″ midfielder. So far this year he  leads the Golden Eagles in points (6) and goals (3) and is third in the BIG EAST in shots (41), including 21 shots on goal.

Today he was chosen as one of four midfielders named to the Soccer America Team of the Week following MU’s 1-0 win over nationally ranked Georgetown this past Saturday.

Mallace’s goal in the 29th minute against the Hoyas (ranked No. 16 last week by Soccer America) helped MU snap a five-game winless streak. He, along with senior goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski, represented the Golden Eagles on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, which was released Monday.

All four of Mallace’s collegiate goals have been game-winners and he has delivered the game-winning goal in all three of Marquette’s (3-7-3, 2-3-3 BIG EAST) victories this season, each a 1-0 decision at Valley Fields.

“Calum has been nothing short of exciting for us at Marquette,” said associate head coach Stan Anderson, speaking to Inside Minnesota Soccer. “What separates him from the rest is understanding crucial moments in a match and capitalizing on them…as witnessed by his 3 game-winning goals…2 from set pieces.” Anderson says that he believes that Mallace will just get better. “To top it off his best football is ahead of him,” claimed Anderson.
