2009 MIAC Men’s Soccer Season Ending with a Bang
The 2009 MIAC men’s soccer season is coming to a close in dramatic fashion.
Tuesday’s round of MIAC men’s soccer games were crucial for several teams to stay in the dogfight for a playoff spot. The top 4 teams in the standings will move on to a postseason MIAC playoff championship with the winner moving on to the NCAA D3 Tournament.
On Tuesday Concordia traveled to St. Thomas and the Cobbers played the Tommies to a 0-0 draw in overtime, landing them each with a point.
St. Olaf squeaked out a win over visiting Bethel 1-0 and earned the Ole’s 3 points.
Gustavus easily handled Hamline with a 4-0 win and 3 pts. and Macalester used their home field advantage to take care of last-placed St. John’s by a score of 3-0 and earning them a very important 3 points.
With one round of games left, the standings still have Carleton (8-1) in the lead with 24 points. But 5 teams are separated by only 2 points. St. Olaf (6-3-0) is tied for 2nd place with 18 pts along with Macalester (6-3-0) also with 18 points. Concordia (5-3-1), St. Thomas (5-3-1), and Gustavus (5-3-1) all are tied with 16 points for the 4th place spot.
The final round of games sees 1st place Carleton playing 2nd place St. Olaf in a derby in Northfield on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1:00 pm.
Also on Saturday, Concordia, tied for 4th, will host St. Johns (1-7-1), who are in last place.
St.Thomas, who sit in that 4th place tie, will play host to St. Mary’s (1-7-1) who are tied for last place with 4 points.
Gustavus will play a difficult game at home against underachieving Augsburg (3-6-0) and who sit in 8th place.
Macalester, tied for 2nd place, will play a spunky 9th place Hamline (2-6-1) at 1 pm on Friday.
