Class 2A Boys State Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal Results
Wayzata 2-1 Bloomington Jefferson
Rainy, windy, and cold is what the game report said that was filed by the referee at the class 2A boys State Soccer Tournament quarterfinal. But that would be an understatement where brutal might have been more descriptive. None the less, the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars (12-4-4) played the Wayzata Trojans (10-6-4) to a 0-0 draw up until the 82 minute. That’s when Michael Kirsch pulled through for the Trojans with a goal scored by taking a shot that deflected into the lower left of Bloomington Jefferson’s goal. The shot from Kirsch was assisted by Andrew Zaragoza and was all that was needed to wrap the game up for the section 6AA champions.
The game ended with stats favoring Wayzata. The Trojans took 11 shots with most being on goal, forcing the Jaguars keeper to make 10 saves.
Woodbury 2-1 Champlin Park – in OT
Much has been written this year about Woodbury’s great girls soccer team, leaving the boys to stand in their shadow. But the Woodbury Royals (15-0-3) boys soccer team took one more step in defining their own way on Friday evening as they defeated a very worthy Champlin Park Rebels (11-7) in overtime.
Woodbury started the scoring for the evening with a goal by Mats Brendesaeter. All-State Eric Miller crossed the ball from the left for the Royals where he found Brendesaeter, who was able to finish by slotting his shot to the lower right corner. The goal came 23 minutes into the game.
Champlin answered back in the 45th minute of play. Welton Mah crossed the ball from the right side and found Ayub Baker who shot high and left to put one past the Royals keeper and put the Rebels on the scoreboard.
With the game tied it went to overtime. In the 1st minute of the second overtime, Eric Miller again got into the action for the Royals. Miller took a free kick which found senior forward Pat Moore, who was able to slot the ball into the lower right corner and advance the Royals to the semifinals in the Metrodome.
Neither team had many shots on goal as Woodbury mustered 6 and Champlin 4.
Woodbury will now move on to play Wayzata in the semifinals of the Minnesota State High School Soccer Tournament. That game will be played on November 2, at 6 pm in the Metrodome.

The goal in the Wayzata win was scored by Michael Kirsch, not Ellis Andrews.
Thanks John. You may be correct, but the official MSHSL stats have it going to Andrews. I’ll shoot an email off to their coach and see what he says.

I watched both games at Park HS on Friday afternoon/evening.
It’s a shame the weather was such a huge factor truly limiting the teams ability to utilize their skills. The wind essentially made it a game of chance.
I’m wondering if it would make sense in the future to hold all the games in a dome to eliminate the weather factors that came into play on Friday.
Of course it was the same at Park on Friday night as well. I don’t know what the added cost would be, but with the Twins and Gophers now gone out of the dome, I would think that would be a very real possibility next year.
Alright then, thanks to John Andrews for setting the story straight. I received an email back from coach Dominic Duenas and he tells me that is correct. The goal was scored by Michael Kirsch. Correction made.
Wayzata beat Jefferson in OT.
Woodbury scored 2 before Champlin Park scored and game never went to OT.
