2009 MN State HS Soccer Boys 2A Semifinal – Wayzata Does it Again
The Wayzata Trojans have now gone nine straight games undefeated and against some pretty good opponents. Not bad for a team with a 12-6-4 record, meaning almost all their wins have come at the most important time, the end of the season.
The Trojans struck 15 minutes into the second half. Ellis Andrews hit a free kick from 20 yards out. The ball was struck well but it did deflect off a defender and into the goal and didn’t allow Woodbury goalkeeper Peter Runquist a chance.
11 minutes later Woodbury got on the board with their playmaker Eric Miller. The junior midfielder headed the ball in after a throw in by Alex Young and some confusion in front of the net. The ball popped up to Miller who nodded it home.
Regular time ended with the two sides tied 1-1 and the stats in favor of the Royals. Woodbury had dominated in terms of shots, 8-2 and corner kicks, 5-1.
But as Mahotmedi found out earlier in the day, it’s what your team does at the end that matters and Wayzata is in a pattern of making it count at the end.
In the 56th minute of play, Ellis Andrews scored his second goal of the night and possibly his biggest goal of the year. On an indirect free-kick Wade Williams found Ellis on the left side of the goal. The ball ended up at Ellis’ feet and the sophomore forward put the ball into the net and his team into the class 2A Championship game on Thursday.
