2 games were played today in the 2009 MIAC Women’s Soccer Playoff.

The 16-0-2 Concordia Cobbers, who were rated #7 in the nation, were upset this afternoon by the Carleton  Knights (9-5-5) at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN.

This was the third time in four seasons the Knights locked up with Concordia College in the MIAC Playoffs and just like in 2006, the score was tied 1-1 sending the contest into a shootout. This time, however, it was the Knights’ turn for victory, winning on penalty kicks, 3-1.

In the other match of the day, Macalester (12-4-2) took on St. Thomas (8-2-1) at the Tommies’ home field.

The Tommies out-shot their guests 19-7, including 9-2 in shots on goal, and earned an 11-5 margin in corner kicks, but it would not be the hosts’ day. Macalester scored early and held off host St. Thomas in the MIAC semi-final match.

Emily Bardwell (Jr., Denver, Colo. / East) scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season just 7:19 into the contest to account for the game’s only score.

Carleton will play at Macalester College on Saturday, Nov. 7 with a bid to the NCAA tournament on the line.

With Concordia’s record and national ranking, they most likely will also get a ticket to the tournament.
