MSHSL_Soccer_2009The Second round of the 2009 Minnesota State High School Soccer Tournament wrapped up today with the girls semifinals in class 2A.

Woodbury 3-0 Eagan

The first game saw the #1 seeded Woodbury Royals (20-0-1) take on the Eagan Wildcats (19-2-1).

The scoring got underway just 5 minutes into this match. Both teams seemed to be testing and probing the other’s defense when the Wildcats failed to clear a ball in their own end. In a mass of players, the Royals Caitlin Graboski jumped on the opportunity and toe poked the ball through the tangle of players and past Eagan’s goalkeeper Kristen Knutson to put Woodbury up 1-0.

Both teams had chances but the half ended with the advantage in shots going to Eagan 5-3 as well as corner kicks, which were 3-0 in the Wildcats favor.

The second half scoring opened just 10 minutes into the half. Eagan had been controlling most of the play when the ball was quickly countered to the other end of the field by Woodbury. Emily Erickson feed a pass to  Alyssa DuVal to the right of  goal and 20  yards out. DuVal broke free of her defender and shot low far post, slipping it under Eagan keeper Knutson and raising the Royals’ lead to 2-0.

Just 6 minutes later Woodbury put the icing on their cake with a third and final goal. Ms. Soccer for Class 2A, Kassey Kallman, took a corner kick at 55:30 in the game. She hit a driven ball into the box where the Royals’ Mary Kroening rose high above the crowd and powered a header into the net from 10 yards out.

Wayzata 1-0 Edina

5-4  Wayzata in shootouts

The second game of the girls 2A saw the Wayzata Trojans (16-0-5) take on the Edina Hornets ( 16-1-2). These two teams played each other twice during the regular season and both games ended in a draw. So it was no surprise when the two teams tested each other time after time but were unable to find the back of the net. However, this game would demand a conclusion one way or another.

In the second overtime, Edina swapped goalkeepers. Caitlin Schnorbach had done a fine job stopping 9 shots. But Nora Forbes was brought in as a shot stopper in case the game went to shootouts. Forbes saw time throughout the season as well as Schnorbach.

Regulation and overtimes ended with an advantage to Wayzata in shots 15-9 over Edina. Corner kicks were also in the Trojans’ favor 6-3.

With the game drawn even 0-0 and after 110 minutes the contest turned to spot kicks.

Wayzata won the penalty kick contest 5-4 with Edina missing their second kick.

Woodbury will now play Wayzata in the girls class 2A Championship game this Thursday, November 5, at 3:00 pm at the Metrodome.
