2009 MIAC Soccer Playoff Championship – Men’s Winner Macalester – Women’s Carleton
In a unique pair of MIAC playoff finals, the Men’s and Women’s competition saw the same pair of schools facing off for the league championship and a ticket to the NCAA D-III Tournament. The Carleton men’s soccer team played Macalester at Carleton yesterday afternoon, while the women’s championship game was last night and saw the exact same schools matched up. Home field advantage helped neither of the hosts.

In the Men’s afternoon game, Macalester topped Carleton by a score of 1-0 on Saturday to win the 2009 MIAC Men’s Soccer Playoff Championship. Carleton had finished first in league play with an 8-2/15-5 record.
Scott Petesch scored at 60:26 and that was all that the Scots needed to claim the victory over the Knights on a sun-splashed afternoon in Northfield. Carson Gorecki assisted on the goal.
Carleton outshot Macalester 12-7 and held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.

In the evening match, Carleton sophomore Niki Tomita (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) notched her second hat trick over the last 10 days to propel the Carleton College women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Macalester College in the finals of the MIAC Playoffs. With the win, the Knights clinched the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.
In the process, Carleton improved to 6-0-4 over the last five weeks and became the first No. 4 seed ever to win the MIAC Women’s Soccer Playoffs. This was also Carleton’s first victory at Macalester since 1984.
Macalester had 10 shots to Carleton’s 6 and dominated the corners 6-0.
Both winners will earn an automatic trip to the NCAA D-III tournament. The draw for the tourney could still include the Carleton men’s program for their 8-2 record and based on the strength of the MIAC conference. On the women’s side, the Concordia Cobbers would have to be considered with their dominating 10-0-1/16-0-2 record.
IMS will update you after the draw.
