Teal Bunbury Named MAC Player of the Year – Zips Top Team, gets bye in NCAA Tourney
Prior Lake, MN native Teal Bunbury is having the season of his life, and so are his teammates at Akron of Ohio. The Zips are currently undefeated at 20-0-0 in Men’s Division I NCAA play.
Last Sunday the Zips defeated Hartwick by a score of 2-1, winning its third consecutive Mid-American Conference Tournament championship. Akron have now tied Evansville (1990) for the fourth longest single-season win streak in NCAA history.
Bunbury is having a breakout year. Last year as a freshman he scored only 6 goals. The sophomore scored again in the win over Hartwick bringing his season total to 16 for the 2009 season and ties him for the nation’s lead.
Because Bunbury is still a sophomore he is not eligible for the Herman Trophy. However, the Canadian youth international was named the 2009 MAC Player of the Year and has recorded at least one point in each of his last seven games. He was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer 2009 Men’s College Soccer 1st team.
Akron’s first game in the NCAA tournament will be played against the winner of the Stetson v So. Florida contest. That game will be hosted by Akron on Sunday at 4:00 pm est. Akron received a bye in the first round of the tournament.
