Interview with Teal Bunbury of the Akron of Ohio Zips

2009 November 30
by Brian Quarstad

Teal_BunburyToday’s guest is Teal Bunbury of the Akron of Ohio Zips soccer team. Teal has been a resident of Minnesota since 2000, growing up in Prior Lake. He played for the Rochester Thunder PDL team this past summer and has 17 goals for Akron this season. As a sophomore he leads the NCAA in scoring. His Akron Zips are the #1 ranked Division 1 team in the country with a 22-0-0 record and are looking to become the first team in 35 years to win a national championship with a perfect record. The team enters the quarterfinals this Sunday at home against Tulsa, who are 15-4-2. With a win the Zips would be 2 wins away from completing a perfect season.

In this interview, Teal speaks of his dream season with the Zips and how both coaching and talented players are making the difference. He explains why his family moved to Minnesota and what influenced him to play for Akron. He also tells us of his aspirations of following in his father’s footsteps and becoming a pro after college soccer.

Special thanks to Ken Webb for research assistance.

Just a bit of information. There was some talk earlier in another post on Teal and I believe someone stated that he was not eligable for the Hermann Trophy because he is not a junior or senior. Kevin Freidland set me straight on this today and I went to the web site to verify. Teal would qualify for the award even though he wasn’t on the watch list from last August.

    Here is the link: http://www.mac-hermann-trophy.org/voting_method.htm

Voting for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy is done by a vote of current head coaches at the NCAA Division I level. A nominating committee, consisted of conference representatives from each Division I conference for men and women, select 15 candidates to appear on the ballot. Ballots with the names of the top 15 men are sent to the mens’ head coaches, and ballots with the names of the top 15 women are sent to the womens’ head coaches.

The coaches’ committee selection is not a criterion for a player to win the award. The official ballot is an open ballot. Any player who meets the requirements of the award can receive votes for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy. Ballots were sent to coaches via e-mail from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

    Criteria for the Award Are:

    1. Recipient must attend an accredited Division I college or university located in the United States.

    2. Recipient may be in any year of his/her college education.

    3. Recipient promotes ethical and sportsmanlike behavior.

    Voter Instructions:

    1. Ballots must contain the names of three players. The names will be assigned a point value in descending order. The player receiving the highest point total wins the award.

    2. The coach must e-mail the ballot.

    3. Ballots must be submitted no later than Wednesday, Nov. 30.

    4. Ballots must adhere to all the instructions to be counted.

Teal, sign with MLS and GA so Philly can draft you. If not them, then RSL!
