MIAC teams earn NSCAA Team Academic Awards
St. Paul, Minn. — Five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men’s soccer teams and five women’s teams have earned the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award. Carleton College, Macalester College, and St. Olaf College received the award for both their men’s and women’s programs.
MIAC women’s teams to earn the award included: Macalester College (3.63 GPA, coached by John Leaney), St. Olaf College (3.56 GPA, Jeremy Driver), Carleton College (3.53 GPA, Keren Gudeman), St. Catherine University (3.26 GPA, Steve Bellis), and Hamline University (3.24 GPA, Ted Zingman). Macalester’s team GPA is ranked fourth among all collegiate women’s soccer teams and first in Division III. St. Olaf’s team GPA is 13th best in the nation and Carleton tied for the 19th best GPA in the nation.
MIAC men’s programs honored by the NSCAA were: Macalester College (3.43 GPA, coached by Ian Barker), Augsburg College (3.42 GPA, Greg Holker), Carleton College (3.39 GPA, Bob Carlson), St. Olaf College (3.36 GPA, Kurt Anderson), and Saint John’s University (3.05 GPA, Patrick Haws). Macalester’s team GPA is the seventh-best among all collegiate men’s soccer teams in the nation and fourth among Division III teams. Augsburg’s team GPA is 10th in the nation, Carleton’s GPA is 16th in the nation, and St. Olaf is tied for 18th.
A total of 476 soccer teams (143 men’s teams, 333 women’s teams) in all NCAA and NAIA divisions posted team GPAs of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale to earn NSCAA Team Academic Award honors. A total of 99 institutions had both their men’s and women’s programs recognized.
