2010 World Cup Groups are Set – USA’s ‘Group C’ Gives Them Chance to Advance

FIFA World Cup 2010FIFA held the World Cup draw today for South Africa 2010. Everyone gave a gasp when the US first drew England who were the #1 seed in group C, because it was believed that with a European team there was a better chance of having another decent European team drawn. But as it ends up, the US looks a sure thing to advance into the round of 16 with a good performance. The US is grouped with England, Algeria and Slovenia.

The group of death ended up being Group G with Brazil, N. Korea, The Ivory Cost and Portugal.

Mexico ended up in Group A with S. Africa, Uruguay and France. Possibly a slightly more difficult group than the US’s Group C.

Honduras ends up with a very lucky draw in Group H with Spain, Switzerland and Chile.

It doesn’t appear to be any horrific “groups of death” as in years past.

How is Honduras lucky? Unless I missed some sarcasm there, Spain and Chile are far superior. I think Germany is the luckiest of all.

I agree with JM that Germany has the easiest group. However, I would love to see the Socceroos upset Deutschland!! That coupled with a repeat of 1950 with USA winning over England would do it for me!

Group A: Mexico has a chance and will likely battle with South Africa for the #2 spot in this group. I think France has the #1 spot in their hands…

Group B: Argentina seems to have a relatively easy draw and should be top dogs provided Maradonna doesn’t muck it all up. Can Euro 2004 Champs Greece rise to the challenge?

Group C: As Brian said the US should advance provided they put in good performances. I think we got a good draw and should be happy with it.

Big Questions for the US: Is Jermaine Jones going to be with the team? will he be match fit? Rumor has it that C. Davies will be back to health by the WC; again match fitness?

Group D: Germany should take the group but would hardly say they are lucky. M. Essien and Ghana will be ready to compete as will Serbia, who have a strong defense.

Group E: Netherlands have a slight edge in this group but face tough competition throughout the group.

Group F: Italy’s ‘experience’ (old age…) should get them through the group stage but will have a big hill to climb during the knockout stage.

Group G: Hands down Group of Death; loads of talent in the group. Brazil (kaka, luis fabiano, etc), Ivory Coast (Drogba, Toure bros), Portugal (CR7, Figo), and North Korea (well, lets just say they got an unlucky draw). Who gets left behind?

Group H: Spain shouldn’t face too much competition until the knockout stage (will this hurt them?). Excited to see which team has the spirit to push through.

    Questions for the US:

I take back my first comment – Group G’s a killer.

This was the first time I ever watch a World Cup draw. Very interesting process. I am glad I was able to filter out all the festivities and just see the actual draw. Some of those people looked really bored.

I just hope the US gets the “stuff” straight. I am going to be very disappointed if our lads do not make it to the final 16.

Well, I don’t think anyone can argue that we got shafted on the draw. Unlucky for my Samurai Blue though.

fifa.com reports that Sony will “deliver 3D images from up to 25 matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa” in a film to be released following the event. Sounds exciting!

Ya, I did see that and Tweeted it the other day with a link. Hold on…ahh yes, found my tweet.

@SoccerMarketer FIFA & Sony announce up to 25 matches of 2010 World Cup will be available in 3D (via @sponsorpitch) http://bit.ly/6R1gMP

What about the ball that is to be used for all World Cup matches. I cannot wait to get one!

  11. December 5, 2009

Every World Cup another gimmick ball. Some have been significant, most not. For $130.00, I can wait. There are plenty of really great balls you can get for $50.00 to $75.00 and for most of us, it wouldn’t make any difference anyway.
