Teal Bunbury is Finalist for Hermann Trophy
Minnesota’s Teal Bunbury has been chosen as one of three finalists for the Hermann Trophy which will be handed out on January, 8 at the Missouri Athletic Club. The Hermann is college soccer’s highest award given.
Bunbury’s Akron of Ohio Zips defeated the University of North Carolina Tar Heels 1-0 in a game that went all the way to shootouts. The game “officially” goes down as a tie so Akron’s record-tying season ends at 23-0-0. The consolation is the Zips advance to Sunday’s College Cup Final against Virgina – a game that will be broadcast at 12:00 CT on ESPN 2.
Bunbury, who moved to Prior Lake, MN in 2000, attended Shattuck St. Mary’s High School and is currently a sophomore at Akron. He played for the 1st year Rochester Thunder PDL team this past summer and was that team’s top goal scorer. He has collected numerous awards already this season. He is the number one goal scorer in the NCAA D-1 with 17 goals and was named the Mid-American Conference and Goal.com Player of the Year. He was also named to the Division I All-America first team.
Bunbury is in good company with the other 2 finalists being Andre Akpan and Corben Bone.
Akpan, a senior who plays for Harvard, has been a semifinalist for the trophy 3 consecutive years. He is the school’s all-team leading scorer with 127 points and was named as the Ivy League Player of the Year for 2009.
Bone, a junior midfielder from Plano, Texas has been a standout for Wake Forest. He was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and currently sits second on Wake’s career assists list with 38. Bone saw his last game of the season last night as his Demon Deacons were defeated in the College Cup Semifinals on Friday evening by a score of 2-1 in overtime by Virginia.
All three finalists will be invited to the ceremony in St. Louis on January, 8 when the trophy will be awarded.
