Todd Yeagley

Madison Soccer Central reported Friday evening that the Todd Yeagley era at the University of Wisconsin Madison lasted just one year. According to Eric Anderson, the coach resigned exactly one year to the date he took the job at Madison.

Yeagley is leaving UW Madison to take the head coaching job at rival Big Ten school, Indiana. Yeagley is 37 years old and replaced Mike Freitag who ran the show at Indiana for 6 years before being dismissed this fall.

“It is an honor to be selected to lead the Indiana University men’s soccer program,” Yeagley said in a news release on the Indiana Web site. “(My wife) Suzy and I are excited to return to our beloved alma mater and raise our three boys in a wonderful college town.”

The UW of Madison cannot be happy with Yeagley’s decision after only one year. Yeagley was 3-3-0 in conference play this year and 7-9-2 overall.

With the no division 1 soccer in Minnesota, many of the state’s top soccer talent end up playing at D-1 schools in Wisconsin. Minnesotans on the UW Madison roster this past year were: Miles Marmo (JR-Excelsior, MN), Brandon Miller (SR-Vadnais Heights, MN), Colin Monasterio (SO-Maple Grove, MN) and Ryan Vint (JR-Plymouth, MN).

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee is also without a coach at the present time.  Jon Coleman, who coached the men’s soccer program at UW Milwaukee for 4 seasons, will not be returning to the school according to the school’s AD George Koonce. That announcement was made on November 20th as the school said they are conducting a national search. Coleman compiled a 20-44-12 record while with the Panthers as head coach.

Minnesotans on the UW Milwaukee roster this past year were: Sam Alexander (SO-Lakeville, MN), Nkuti Ndely  (Sr-Coon Rapids, MN), Nicholas Gerard-Larson (Sr-Duluth, MN), Aaron Gibbons (SO-Mpls, MN), Abe Gibbons (Jr-Mpls, MN), Greg Rosenthal (Jr-St. Paul, MN).

What a bad reflection on Todd Yeagley. He certainly did not care or have feel any dedication to WI .
He never intended on staying with that WI team, because his father was trying to oust Freitag to get his son the job. Bloomington community is very outraged with this situation.

Freitag was at IU over 25 years not just 6. Typo- Freitag was at IU as 6 years as head coach- 25 years total.

He was an All Amercian player at IU then grad assistant there in the 80′s for 3 years. In 1993 he started his 10 years as first assistant to Jerry Yeagley with 3 NCAA National Championships, then had 6 years as head coach with a steller record and a NCAA college cup.

I hope WI finds someone who is dedicated to this program and sincere.

Ya, had been corrected on that via facebook last night. Fixed now, thanks and agree. It does not put Yeagley in a very good light in my book.

Wow, can’t believe how UW must view this betrayal. That being said, just look at what the Yeagley’s did to Mike Freitag. Jerry Yeagley built Coach Freitag up to be a great coach and leader, and then when he decided it was time to get his son back home he set the plan in -motion to get Freitag fired. Mind you-Freitag has had nothing but winning seasons and Jr. Yeagley had a losing season at UW…couldn’t even get good recruits or assisstants that wanted work with him. A sad, sad day for IU Soccer program. Good luck, Freitag….you are a loyal, hardworking, dedicated person!

This would seem like a real easy decision for Todd Yeagley. Think about it, the last time UW had a really good soccer team was in 1995, when Jim Launder won the NCAA title. His reward? He was fired. If I’m not mistaken, they haven’t even been back to the tournament since then.

    Tom,

In addition to firing Launder, they also got rid of Ian Barker. They (pat richter) wanted to fire Launder the same year he won the Title 1995 (20-4-1, .820), but ‘gave in’ to pressure to keep him…for one more year. In 1996 the badgers were 11-5-5, at which point UW parted ways with Launders and his staff.
With Kalekeni Banda at the helm they went:
    1997 (7-13-0, .350)
    1998 (4-15-1, .225)
    1999 (6-13-1, .325)
    2000 (10-9-1, .525)
    2001 (10-8-1, .553)

At that point, the Badgers went with Jeff Rohrman, who equally coached to mediocrity:
    2002 (9-10-0, .474)
    2003 (11-10-1, .523)
    2004 (9-10-0, .474)
    2005 (8-11-0, .421)
    2006 (9-8-2, .526)
    2007 (6-7-6, .474)
    2008 (9-7-3, .553)

The Badgers haven’t had an 11 win season since Launders left…brilliant decision. Launder’s had only two season’s that his team’s did not win 11 or more games 1990 (8-8-4, .500) and 1982 (10-6-2, .611) (his first year).

I’ve followed this debacle since 1995 when Ian was my ODP coach back in WI. and it is a shame that they can’t find the right coach to turn this program around!!

I don’t know the history of UW so could someone tell me why Launder and Barker were let go in the first place. I don’t know Launder but I have alot of respect for Ian as a coach.

    Tom,
Let’s see how long Todd stays at IU if he doesn’t win the College Cup. I bet he can stay as long as his dad has a say. So corrupt at IU….why doesn’t their AD put an end to it all? He and old man Yeagley must be buds.

Same was true at UWMilwaukee where appathetic or personal relationships kept their recently-fired coaching staff in place. When all the news about the goings-on come out, people will be shocked that it was allowed to go on so long.

Anon, first try to come up with a creative user name and then we can get to know you each time you post. You don’t have to give your identity up.

2nd, that’s an awful be open statement you leave there. “When all the news about the goings-on come out, people will be shocked that it was allowed to go on so long” So when will this news come out and who will be speaking about it? Why will they be shocked? Too many open ends here for me even though you may be right. I’d rather wait and see.

There is a new AD at Milwaukee, correct? I heard he’s an ex NFL guy or something and is sort of cleaning things up at UW Milwaukee.
