The Making of “JABULANI”; 2010 Official World Cup Ball
On December 4, before the World Cup draw, the official ball for the 2010 games was unveiled. The name of the ball is “JABULANI” which means “to celebrate” in isiZulu. According to Adidas, maker of the ball, the number 11 is celebrated within the design. It celebrates two of the most important facets of the South African nation – diversity and harmony. The ball displays 11 different colors and signifies the 11 players on the field as well as the number of official languages and tribes of South Africa.
Now Adidas has released a video of the making of that ball and it’s pretty surprising. Even though automation is clearly used, there’s a lot more hand work done than one might expect. The video is a bit long but I thought it was interesting enough to post. It reminds me a bit of the “Inside the Nike Boot Room” which I posted earlier this year. That is still one of my favorites! Because of the added soundtrack, that video has a bit more of a mood to it which Adidas clearly should have done with this video to give it a more polished feel and make it a bit more entertaining. Still, the video held me captive till the end and I thought I would share it with you if you’ve not seen it. Enjoy!

Santa brought one to me for Christmas. I can’t wait to get out on the soccer pitch and kick it around. It smells good too!!!
Great article. We got one for Christmas and it is an amazing ball. My wife told me the price, and I was taken aback – until we looked at it. The article gives appreciation for how it came together and why it is so unique. Thanks again for the insight.
