UW-Milwaukee to Name Coach by End of January

by Brian Quarstad

UW_Milwaukee_PanthersEric Anderson is reporting at Madison Soccer Central that officials at UW-Milwaukee are stating that they will make a decision soon on the men’s soccer coaching position at the school. The position has been vacant since November 20, 2009 when the school’s AD announced that Jon Coleman would not be returning to coach in 2010.

UWM associate athletic director Kathy Litzau told Anderson that the search committee will meet on Friday to review the applicants and will also invite a number of new candidates for on-campus interviews. Litzau stated that the university hopes to name a new coach by the end of the month.

Anderson states that the leading candidates at this time are: Marquette assistant coach Stan Anderson, former University of Wisconsin coach Jeff Rohrman, Neenah native Kris Kelderman, former UW assistant Jon Szczepanski, Milwaukee School of Engineering coach Jimmy Banks and former UW coach Jim Launder.

For more detailed information on the process and the coaching candidates please see Madison Soccer Central.

I don’t think Anderson used “leading candidates”, but “possible candidates”. Hopefully, with a national search they will include some candidates outside the recently tried/failed former UW/UWM player, former UW/UWM assistance. Some of the candidates metioned could never get it going at UW, others can’t seem to get it going at Marquette.

I was fully aware of the words I used and the words Eric used. I said leading because I would have to assume those people listed are the leading candidates. If they were inviting others it quite possible they are in your camp and want to see if some others may have some fresh blood to move the program in a new direction. But come you would have to believe that those folks listed are the leading candidates. I used the word on purpose, not out of chance or mistake.

UW-M junior captain Greg Rosenthal of St. Paul played a few games in the Augsburg men’s league on Monday, Dec. 28. Last season, he tied for the team lead in scoring as a defender.

Former Thunder defender Mark Schulte of the Carolina Railhawks played at Augsburg this past Monday, Jan. 4.

MN Soccer Guy, we should have your do a Charlie Walters column for IMS. You know, “Saw Buzz Lagos shopping for light bulbs at the local hardware store.” ;)

I coached Greg, have known him and his family for years. Greg was moved up to midfield about half way through the season.

Why was Schulte here and what league was he playing in?

I had a phone conversation with Buzz the other day, does that count?

I’m not surprised Rosie was moved to midfield, he is a very skilled ballplayer, and extremely strong. I hadn’t seen him play before, I missed both games against his men’s team (Cougars) this summer. From what I heard from our guys, he was a machine.

I did not speak with Mark. He was playing with Inferno ’95 in the men’s open league.

I was just lamenting the other day his playing at UW Milwaukee for Coleman who seemed to lose the plot the last couple of years. I think Greg might very well be getting national attention if he had been playing at a school that had some success. It will be important for him to play for a high profile PDL team this summer.

Outside of Kelderman or Launder, the others listed above would be a disaster. All of the UWM players have had quite an ordeal the past 4 years. According to 1 player (who’s name will not be mentioned) the coaching was worse each successive year of Coleman’s tenure. At this point, UWM, the program, the alumni and the players deserve the best UWM can find.

I should be careful as not to be to objective but I actually heard the same thing as far as Coleman went. Perhaps a bit desperate at the end? Launder seems as if he would be a decent choice.

As a former player at uwm I would have to agree that Coleman was a huge mistake after Louis left us. The problem came from Coleman hiring Bob as an assistant. In that first year Bob tried to run everything and did not allow Coleman to find his way. The second year Coleman tried to step up, but was unsure on how to do so. After that when Bob left “got forced out” Coleman was lost and was stuck in a position were for two years was not able to find his own coaching identity and everything went down hill from there. As for the coaches they are considering Stan great guy, great assistant coach, but he is not ready to step up and take over a program. He doesn’t even want the responsibilities of the head coach. If he got hired he is planning in bring in C.D. to be his assistant and told him that he would be more like the head coach. Stan’s not ready. Jimmy Banks on the other hand great guy, great coach. He is your guy. I’m not sure if any of you guys are aware of the things jimmy has been able to do with the program that he has had, but he was able to make a club called simba lions which was players from the inner city and turn them into a very good club. Out of that club there has been 20 plus players that went on to play D1 soccer and 5 plus pro. I don’t know about you but that is impressive. These are inner city kids that had nothing that people don’t go look at when recruiting, these are your “diamonds in the rough” and that is what UWM is about. Then he took over a program MSOE, which was a very bad program and turn that place into a program that can play with any team in D3. His ability to recruit is amazing and that is shown at a program where you not only need to be a decent soccer player for jimmy to get you in, but on top of that you need to have really good grades. Jimmy should have gotten the job 4 years ago. It is important that UWM does not seek out or bring in a coach with no ties or connections to UWM, because ask any alumni and they will tell you there are certain traditions that need to stay that only those who played there know about and can truly care those on.
