US Soccer Calls Press Conference Regarding Division II Soccer

2010 January 7
by Brian Quarstad

ussoccerUS Soccer has sent out an advisory this morning that there will be a press conference today at 2:00 CT in regard to Division II professional soccer league for the 2010 season.

Those in attendance will be U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati, U.S. Soccer CEO/Secretary General Dan Flynn, USL CEO Alec Papadakis and NASL Acting Commissioner Jeff Cooper.

The press conference is definitely a very good sign and IMS believes a resolution will be announced.

IMS has been invited and hopes to participate in the conference call.

As reported earlier today, once the press conference is held, expect more news from the National Sports Center on their new team. Many of the organization’s plans have been on hold while waiting for resolution to this issue. They have also been part of the gag order from US Soccer and have been unable to say much during this period.

This morning, representatives of all NASL teams are traveling to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the league’s first annual general meeting that will start today.

Kartik Krishnaiyer is reporting today that more stringent foreign player limits will be part of this new agreement, at least for this year as the league will be overseen by US Soccer. This may not help the overall quality of the league but will certainly help to create a high level place to develop the US and Canadian soccer player who will find limited space on MLS rosters.

Also, look for 2 divisions with interleague play.

Brian, when you reference two divisions, do you mean a USL division and a NASL division? If so, any thoughts on which side the potential NSC MN team might fall on?

That should be clear later today or tomorrow. :)

Press conference today: where will this be located? NASL AGM also begins today, so would they do this at the NASL meeting in Ft. Lauderdale … if so, then having USL CEO Papadakis, standing along side NASL Acting Commissioner, Jeff Cooper, would be quite significant. To me this would appear as though the USL has (and indeed would have) made significant compromises.

I’m sure it’s in NY where they have been meeting. There is no way Papadakis goes to the NASL AGM. There is yet plenty of ill will.

Brian – I’m sure everyone would agree that you deserve a big pat on the back for all your (as well as all your other webcast friends) efforts at keeping us all informed and what seems to be instantly updated on the D2 story. Much appreciated!

“Press conference today: where will this be located?”

Ever heard of a several-way conference call?

I don’t know why I bother. The guy who runs the site just censors people who don’t agree with him.

This presser means that we are one step closer to keeping professional soccer in Minnesota!

    I couldn’t be happier.

Brian, the press conference is just for approved US Soccer media. Your comments are on moderation, not because I disagree with you. I love to have to debate people with valid arguments that can change my mind yet are respectful and contrary.

It’s simple really. I just don’t allow comments that are inflammatory and insulting. Some people feel they need to act like that on the internet for whatever reason (behind a shield) I’m not really sure. I want IMS to be a place where folks are free to express their ideas without feeling attacked. Simple enough, right?

“Ever heard of a several-way conference call?” example of what I’m talking about.

Im i the only one who think this is stupid and the only reason they did this is because the USSF dosent want to deal with the issue.
