New NASL Block Logo Revealed
As part of the new North American Soccer League’s annual general meeting agenda, team representatives reviewed artwork that inches toward the final logo for the league. While this may not be the final official logo, it certainly reveals the direction the official logo will be going. The font is exactly the same as the old NASL logo designed back in the 70′s.
According to the official memo dated January 11, 2010, “Effective immediately” this “block logo” should now be used for all “All media releases, press alerts, collateral material including schedules, pocket schedules, ticket brochures, newsletters, e-blasts, tee-shirts, etc. and web-site home pages.“

U G L Y you ain’t got no alibi…
what would kj do?
NSC > New Soccer Club Minnesota
Doesn’t KJ hate just about every logo???
Let’s not loose sight of the fact that this is only their interim logo.
What would be really exciting would be the return of the “star” ball. If any of you are old enough to remember the unique NASL ball created by Adidas (I actually still have one, although its in pretty rough shape).
I would like to see a couple of the clubs that carry the old NASL nicknames to don retro jerseys for a game or two this season, maybe the first meeting between the Whitecaps and Rowdies should be in NASL-style uniforms to commemorate their 1979 Soccer Bowl matchup, complete with the NASL ball.
A final comment about some negatives I have been hearing about re-using the name of a failed league; the AFL name was used three times before the 1960s version merged with the NFL. Just because the league folded doesn’t mean it failed completely, Canada’s 1986 World Cup appearance owed a lot to the NASL.
The NASL used two different logos during its 1968-84 existence, see Chris Creamer’s websits: http://www.sportslogos.net/team.php?id=1350. I think you will agree that the one they are re-introducing is the better of the two.
^^^^
Very true, 90% of the players on Canada’s ’86 World cup team played in the NASL at some point or another…
Ken, I had one of those balls too at one point but its long gone now. I Just hope they keep the ball out of the logo. Why do so many American/Canadian soccer organizations often find the need to put a soccer ball in the logo? How often do you see a soccer ball in logos of teams from around the world. Although there are a fair amount of leagues that use soccer balls in their log.
I don’t have an issue with the silhouette which has a ball in it as the NBA, WNBA, WPS and MLB use.
Check out other sports logos and you will see that very few use a ball. Basketball seems to be the exception.

retro jerseys, OK< retro shorts … not so much.
LS, Brian Wellman joked about that on Saturday morning on a radio show. Deadpan he told the host that the NASL team owners had all agreed to bring back the the old NASL shorts with the rule being that the trunk could not come down any further than 1″ past the groin. Euewwww! It was pretty funny.
lol lol. Wow! I remember those shorts. And they weren’t even comfy…why did we wear them? But, i do agree it’d be pretty funny….lol
Hey — where is the soccer ball in the logo?!
Hey, I’m not say’n, I’m just say’n. Beside, this isn’t the logo.
Brian, there are representations of footballs/soccer balls on a lot of Eurpoean teams logos. Some prominant examples are Chelsea, Tottenham and Barcelona, to name a few.
Good point, and but, notice, they are very small and not prominent like so many US club logos with giant hex paneled balls in black and white. Both examples you give are the older variety of ball and lend itself to a classy graphic. There is a big difference.
No, I don’t hate every logo.
But the NASL 70s logos are terrible. That font’s awful.
Then again, I hate that they’re trying to use the NASL branding for this new league. Must we recycle everything? Calling yourself the same name as a league that had a short heyday in the 70s is not a marketing plan. Quit trying to act like the NASL is “back” twenty-five years after it died.
Brian, You also make a good point. Regardless of the name or logo, I think we can all agree that it is going to be fun watching soccer–while drinking beer!
