Wilkinson Named Technical Director of MLS club – Amos Magee to Take Larger Role in Coaching Timbers
The Portland Timbers announced the club has appointed USL Division II head coach Gavin Wilkinson as the Technical Director for the Timbers’ Major League Soccer franchise, which is slated to begin play in 2011.
As technical director, Wilkinson, 36, will oversee team-related areas of the MLS franchise, including scouting, player acquisition and management, coaching personnel, the club’s development team and various youth programs.
A New Zealand native, Wilkinson earned 38 caps with the New Zealand National Team, and competed in the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Confederations Cups. The defender’s 13-year playing career included time with clubs in six different countries, including Portugal, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.
Wilkinson played for the Timbers from 2001-06, including the 2005 and 2006 seasons as a player/assistant coach. He currently ranks fourth among modern-franchise career leaders in games (124) and minutes played (10,181).
Wilkinson has been a part of the Timbers organization for nine years, and has served as the club’s general manager and head coach for the past three seasons. Wilkinson will continue as the Timbers head coach in 2010, however assistant coach Amos Magee will assume a larger role on the coaching staff to allow Wilkinson his dual responsibility for the season.

Congratulations to Amo, much deserved for one of the true great people in the game we love. Peace and futbol.
Larger “roll?”
I’ll give you citizen. But you don’t get “journalist.”
Holy bendoli. If you ever learned spelling and grammar, you’d be dangerous.
And yet Oscar, you keep on coming back for more. You must be a masochist.
Woot! You made it BQ you really made it. You have a nitpicker.
Anyways, good luck to Famous Amos and Mr. Wilkinson I really would love to see those two be given the chance in 2011 when the Timbers move up.
smatthew, agreed on Amos and Wilkinson. Wilkinson can seem to be a jerk to the visiting teams but I hear his players appreciate him and the fact that Amos has enjoyed working and been successful with Gavin says loads about him as well. Amos is a quality person and doesn’t like hanging around with people that aren’t decent. Gavin Wilkinson has done a great job in Portland and the move there for Amos has been great for his career. Especially looking back on what happened to the Thunder over the last several years, he looks like a genius for taking that job.
