No, Charlie Davies is not fully recovered and he has a whole lot more to do just to get out on the training ground again. But if you ever doubted he could make that recovery let alone make it in time for the World Cup this summer, yesterday’s outstanding article by Ives Galarcep may make you feel guilty for ever doubting. It certainly had that effect on me.

As most of you know, Charlie Davies is the young American international who was playing in France last year for Sochaux of Ligue 1. He was an up and coming star for the US Men’s National Team and played very well in the Confederations Cup in South Africa last summer. Davies broke curfew the night before a US Men’s National Team game last October and was involved in deadly car accident. Davies was a passenger but was clearly breaking team rules as well as rules of common sense. Chalk it up to being a 23 year old, but it was a mistake that nearly cost him his life and his career and it did cost one young lady her life.

Many US National supporters had become somewhat discouraged with the team’s hopes for South Africa this summer when Oguchi Onyewu also went done with a torn patella days after Davies’ accident. Recently, Clint Dempsey looked doubtful for the World Cup as well with posterior cruciate ligament damage. An injury that now appears to be not as serious as originally thought, but one that will take perseverance to recover from in time for the June tournament.

So with that stage set, I will link you to the inspiring Soccernet article that tells a story of sheer determination and courage. After finishing the article you may be asking yourself the same question I asked myself; if it would truly be possible that all three of the aforementioned US National Team players could yet see play time for the US in South Africa? Before I read Galarcep’s article I would have flatly said NO!  But Charlie Davies has enlightened and I’ve now seen the light. Truth is, I  feel guilty for ever doubting.

As a follow up, Galarcep includes on his blog, some quotes that did not make the article that are also pretty remarkable.

Ives followed up today with an interview with Gooch as he is nearing his return to AC Milan.

Can’t wait to see Charlie in a Sochaux jersey again. They really need him.
