for a midweek game with no prep time on the road at the #3 team in the world i thought the usa did pretty well, they had legit chances to tie that game in the dying moments

sure not everyone was good. and a couple guys were downright bad (bornstein especially)

but as the game wore on the usa pushed the pace and the subs added more to our team than the dutch subs did to theirs

if huntelaar's shot does not hit johnny b it goes about 6 miles over the cross bar

and if altidore had a genuine strike partner, who knows what they could have gotten done

i would give the overall usa performance a 5, and a couple moments late a 6

I have to say I really disagree with much of the response to this game. I thought there were only rare moments in the game where the Dutch were allowed to play the way they wanted. Almost all of their attacks were broken up by great tackles by DeMerit, Bradley, Edu, and Boca. The fact that you never saw much happen from the left flank (and Kuyt was forced in or to the right) makes me think Spector was doing something right (although he failed going forward). We proved difficult to break down until moments of stupidity (penalty) or unluckiness.
That said, going forward we were terrible. Findley was useless. Landy-cakes (though he was quite good at stopping attacks down the left) was useless. Jozy looked better than he did last summer. He looks fit and more capable off the ball.
Here's my biggest complaint: why would we have Landon (right footed, plays on the right for Everton) play on the left when Beasley comes on (left footed). It was like we were playing so that we wouldn't go for crosses.
Final note: Pearce is our best left back, because he doesn't get pinned back. Bradley is the best player on the team.

I was really not impressed with the pay of the US, and think their new jerseys look terrible. The US is really going to need to step it up if they want to make the round of 16. My prediction is a very short World Cup for the US squad.

Well, I respect your opinion Jeff because I know you know your stuff, but I just checked and found these that would agree with me on my rating of De Merit:

I don't know if I would agree about Jay. What I saw was an aggressive defender pressuring the ball, but then not maintaining possession well, too many wasted long clearances made in panic out of the back, reminded me of collage play...

Overall nether team played up to their potential IMO. I expected more from both sides.
