The USSF recently created a system for selecting the USSF D-2 Pro League Player of the Month for the 2010 season. Each of the 12 teams submits 2 players to US Soccer whom they feel are possibly worthy of the award along with a brief explanation why. That list is compiled and then sent to 2 representatives picked by each team in the league. Those representatives are journalists comprised of members of print, television, radio and online media hailing from each the of the 12 USSF D-2 Pro League clubs’ local markets.

David La Vaque of the Star Tribune and Brian Quarstad from Inside Minnesota Soccer have been selected by the NSC Stars to vote for the Player Of The Month.

The USSF D-2 Pro League Player Of The Month for April is the Portland Timbers Ryan Pore.

CHICAGO (May 5, 2010)

U.S. Soccer announced today that Portland Timbers midfielder Ryan Pore was voted the USSF Division-2 Professional League April Player of the Month. Pore recorded six goals and an assist in the opening four games of the 2010 season and has been a part of every Timbers goal scored this year.

The Mansfield, Ohio, native opened his account in the Timbers’ first match against the Rochester Rhinos, converting a late penalty kick in the 85th minute to grab a 1-0 victory for the Oregon side in front of their home fans. He wasted no time tallying his second and third goals of the season against AC St. Louis, netting in the first and 45th minutes. By adding an assist later in the match to round out the 3-0 victory, Pore took his point total to seven in just two games.

In a tough test away to Montreal, the midfielder again got his name on the score sheet by scoring the opener in a 1-1 draw in Quebec. However, Pore’s capacity for scoring crucial goals was on full display in the Pacific Northwest derby against Vancouver Whitecaps FC when Portland ran out 2-1 winners behind two goals from the former Kansas City Wizards midfielder. After opening the scoring in the seventh minute, Pore popped up to score the game winner in the 86th minute just moments after his team had been reduced to 10 men.

Portland holds the league’s best record (3-0-1) and sits atop the USL Conference of the USSF D-2 Pro League with 10 points.

I rarely read the StarTribune. Does David La Vaque go to the Stars home matches and/or regularly report on the team? Just curious–that’s all.

As I stated, David and I were selected by the NSC. David is the Stars beat writer and was the Thunder beat writer. He was at the game last Saturday (not reporting) with his family.
