MYSA State Cup in Full Swing
If you haven’t any children competing in Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) or perhaps just not competing at high levels in the organization, you might not know that the MYSA’s State Cup is currently taking place. While league play has now started for all teams in MYSA, the State Cup is the highest competitive tournament that the league offers and it usually offers the best teams in the state for boys and girls at each age group from U-13 through U-19. However, the tournament is open to all U13–U19 competitive teams. The US Youth Soccer Minnesota State Cup is a tournament designed to select the Minnesota league team or Midwest Regional team at each age level and gender to represent Minnesota at the US Youth Soccer Midwest Region II Championships. Regional winners (U14-U19) will go on to compete in the US Youth Soccer National Championships.
This years competition runs from April 23-May 23, 2010 and is being held at Lucy Winton Bell Athletic Fields, 15601 Hudson Road. Lakeland, MN. Directions can be found here and a map of the complex can be found here.
Last weekend I found myself watching a U-18 boys match between the Blackhawks and Arsenal with each team presenting some very skilled players. Paul Yonga (Arsenal) was playing centerback for his team. Yonga will be playing division I soccer this fall at UW-Madison. Yonga is fun to watch; Not always flashy but rock solid and reads the game far beyond his years.
The Blackhawks have a very skilled forward named Hamad Jaman who scored both of his teams goals. Jaman, who used to play for Arsenal, seems to find the seams to get between defensive players, has deceptive speed and a quick release on a rocket of a shot that has a lot of movement. Jaman will also be playing for the Twin Stars this summer.
For me, the most enjoyable part of this tournament is seeing players like Yonga and Jaman who I know IMS will be reporting on in the future.
For a schedule of games and tournament standings please see the MYSA State Cup page.
IMS will announce the winning teams at the conclusion of the tournament.
